Fifth Saturday

The St. Vincent dePaul Society of St. Michael's has partnered with Transfiguration
parish in an outreach to the homeless that provides meals on Saturday afternoons: specifically,  our volunteer day is the fifth Saturday of the month, which occurs about 3-4 times per year.
Recently, Cobb County rescinded its policy of only allowing commercially prepared food to be served to the homeless, so soon we may be able to prepare and serve food as was done several years ago.  Monetary donations for purchase of food are still appreciated. On the 5th Saturday food is brought to a designated site at the church (usually the Old Rectory), loaded into volunteers' cars or trucks, and transported to a place where the homeless gather. 
    Volunteers are needed to:
           a.  pick up or (in the future) prepare food, and deliver to the drop off place
           b.  fill 'go bags'
           c.  move food to cars or trucks,
           d.  and deliver the food to the distribution point. 
The set-up and delivery take about 2-3 hours.  Food is delivered, depends on the season, between 12-1 pm (winter) or 1-2:30 (summer), and carpools and trucks leave for the site at 1:15pm (in the winter), or at 2:45 (summer).  If you are going to the site separately, be there by 2:15pm (winter) or 2:45pm (summer) .  
     This is a volunteer opportunity for those who love to serve food to others, and who have a heart for conversation and fellowship.

Due to regulation for Cobb County, which may change soon, monetary donations for food are necessary.  As of May 2021, the regulations were relaxed somewhat, so for future Fifth Saturday meals, food may be prepared and delivered by volunteers.
